According to the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website, the Vermont DMV will issue an Ignition Interlock Restricted Driver License (RDL) to those with an eligible alcohol-related DUI and Refusal to Consent to Breath Test charge. An RDL will allow you to operate non-commercial vehicles equipped with an Ignition Interlock Device.
How do I apply for an Ignition Interlock Device Restricted Driver’s License?
An RDL is a special type of driver’s license that allows you to drive again while you’re still serving your DUI suspension, but only if your vehicle is equipped with an Ignition Interlock Device (IID). An IID is a breathalyzer that you must blow into before you can start your car. If your Breath Alcohol Content (BrAC) is above a certain level, the IID will prevent your car from starting.
To qualify for an RDL, you must first apply for and be approved for the Ignition Interlock Program. Once you’re approved, you can schedule an appointment to have an IID installed in your vehicle. Once your IID is installed, you can apply for an RDL through Vermont’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website.
When you have an RDL, you must adhere to all of the terms and requirements associated with the program. This includes:
- Keeping your IID in good working order and having it calibrated regularly
- Taking all required IID tests
- Passing all required breathalyzer tests
- Driving only vehicles that are equipped with an IID
If you violate any of the terms and requirements of the RDL program, your RDL could be suspended or revoked. This could mean that you may need to wait longer to get your full driver’s license back.
At Smart Start, we’re here to help you every step of the way. We can answer your questions about the RDL program, help you find a qualified IID installer, and provide you with support throughout the process.
