How do I know if I need to install an IID in Kentucky?

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) website, the passing of Senate Bill 85 on July 1, 2020, introduced significant changes to the DUI and Ignition Interlock laws. Now, the KYTC delivers a fixed suspension period based on the DUI charge. After serving a specified portion of the suspension period, you can apply for an Ignition Interlock License.

If your license has been suspended, you may apply for an Ignition Interlock Device as a part of the Kentucky Ignition Interlock Program (KIIP). If you are approved, you can operate any approved vehicle(s) equipped with the device for the allowed timeframe. If you decide to enroll in the KIIP, you are eligible for a reduction of your suspension period. An Ignition Interlock license will restrict you to operating only a motor vehicle or motorcycle equipped with a functioning Ignition Interlock Device. To qualify for the suspension reduction program, participants must be violation-free for 90 or 120 consecutive days, based on their offense.

How do I apply for an Ignition Interlock Device Restricted Driver’s License?

To apply for an IID Restricted Driver’s License, visit the KYTC website, fill out the form, submit all the required documents, and meet any other requirements. You will be then provided with a Letter of Approval from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet by mail or email.

Once you have your Letter of Approval, call us at (800) 831-3299 or fill out our online form to set up an installation appointment. The IID must be installed in Kentucky unless preauthorized by KYTC. Smart Start will provide a Certificate of Installation once the device has been successfully installed.
