What is an Ignition Interlock Device (IID)?
An Ignition Interlock Device (IID), also called a car breathalyzer, is a device that measures breath alcohol content (BrAC). It is typically installed in your vehicle as part of an administrative or legal requirement after drunk driving. Learn more about Smart Start's Ignition Interlock here.
How do I know if Smart Start’s devices are compliant with my program?
Smart Start is certified as an IID provider by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Smart Start’s Ignition Interlock Devices (IIDs) are also tested to meet the standards set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
What happens after I get my DUI?
The State of Kentucky may issue restricted driving privileges to a driver who has been revoked due to an alcohol-related DUI. The driver must first apply with the convicting court and be ordered to participate. The driver will then submit an Ignition Interlock Application and a non-refundable application fee of $105 to the Kentucky Division of Driver License. The Transportation Cabinet will then issue a letter describing your eligibility based upon what appears on your driver history record.
Do I need the device on all of my vehicles?
You are only required to install a device on your primary vehicle; however, you may choose to install devices on additional vehicles. The holder of an Ignition Interlock License is only authorized to drive a vehicle with an Ignition Interlock Device installed.
What if I have a requirement, but I don’t own a vehicle?
If you do not own the vehicle you plan to install the Ignition Interlock device in, a written notarized statement from the vehicle’s owner will be required at the time of installation of the device.
How do the consequences differ for a first and second DWI? Third? Fourth?
First DUI (within a 5-year period) with aggravating circumstances: you will need to have the Ignition Interlock for 6 months.
Second DUI (within a 5 year period): an Ignition Interlock is required for 12 months.
Third to fifth DUI (within a 5 – year period): an Ignition Interlock is required for 30 months.
Where does installation fall based on my condition?
You may install only after arraignment of the DUI with alcohol offense, and you receive approval or an order for an Ignition Interlock License and device.
How often does my IID need to be serviced?
You will be required to return to the installation center at least every 30-60 days for vehicle monitoring, so data can be downloaded from the device and reported to the DMV.
Where can I go for Ignition Interlock service?
You can service your Ignition Interlock Device (IID) at any Smart Start service center nationwide.
Where do I send a record of my service appointments?
Records will automatically be sent by Smart Start to the court which ordered the device.
How can I pay for calibration?
What happens if I violate?
In the event of a violation resulting in an order by the court, your IID can be removed and the Transportation Cabinet can suspend your Ignition Interlock license.
